HURT LYRICS

I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
the needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
upon my liar's chair
full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
beneath the stains of time
the feelings disappear
you are someone else
I am still right here

what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

if I could start again
a million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

iPod Index
The iPod (currency) Index is an informal way of measuring the purchasing power parity (PPP) between two currencies.
PPP is based on the law of one price - an economic law stating that: "in an efficient market all identical goods must have only one price" - thus any difference in price must be due to currency exchange rates. If this is not the case, then the currency concerned must be over, or under valued.
The iPod Index differs from the Big Mac Index in that it uses ... more

iPhone Cingular AT&T

Confused by Cingular/AT&T? Colbert to the rescue!
The whole killing off the Cingular brand is quite the confusing ordeal, involving names like SBC, BellSouth, and -- of course -- AT&T. There's a lot of companies involved, and a whole lot of buying and selling. Luckily, Stephen Colbert took it upon himself to clarify the situation with an easy to follow flowchart. It's easy to see how Cingular is turning into AT&T.Okay, maybe not that easy, but one comment that Colbert makes that is particularly interesting relates to how AT&T became, well, AT&T again. Apple iPhone mobile to Generate 50 Percent Margin, According to iSuppli’s Preliminary Analysis

Apple iPhone to Generate 50 Percent Margin, According to iSuppli’s Preliminary Analysis
El Segundo, Calif., Jan. 18, 2007
Each Apple iPhone sold will generate nearly a 50 percent gross margin for Apple Inc. and partner Cingular Wireless, giving the companies a hefty profit, as well as plenty of room for future price cuts, according to a preliminary functional Bill of Materials (BoM) estimate created by iSuppli Corp.
“iSuppli estimates the 4Gbyte version of the Apple iPhone will carry a $229.85 hardware BoM and manufacturing cost and a $245.83 total expense, yielding a 50.7 percent margin on each unit sold at the $499 retail price,” said Andrew Rassweiler, teardown services manager and senior analyst for iSuppli. “Meanwhile, the 8GByte Apple iPhone will sport a $264.85 hardware cost and a $280.83 total expense, amounting to a 53.1 percent margin at the $599 retail price.”
The table below presents iSuppli’s preliminary functional BoM estimate of the 4Gbyte and 8Gbyte versions of the Apple iPhone.

While iSuppli has a high degree of confidence in its conclusions, these figures are considered preliminary until we perform an actual physical teardown and analysis of the iPhone.
Large margins
For Apple, such a strong hardware profit is par for the course, with the company having achieved margins of 45 percent and more in products including the iMac and iPod nano, according to iSuppli. However, because Apple is facing extensive competition in the music-phone market, the company may need to cut into its margins to reduce pricing in the future.
“With a 50 percent gross margin, Apple is setting itself up for aggressive price declines going forward,” said Jagdish Rebello, PhD, director and principal analyst with iSuppli.
Competition in music phones
Apple faces a bevy of competitors in music phones, with 835 models expected to be introduced by various competitors in 2007. iSuppli estimates that 14 music-enabled mobile phones with features that compete closely with the Apple iPhone already are shipping from manufacturers including Nokia, Motorola Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and LG.
In terms of features and form factors, the closest competitor to the Apple iPhone is LG’s KE850, which will ship later this year, said Tina Teng, analyst, wireless communications, for iSuppli. Other phones with similar characteristics include Nokia’s N800, although this product is aimed more at niche markets than the broad-appeal Apple iPhone, Teng added.
Teng said she expects mobile-phone OEMs to introduce models designed specifically to compete with the Apple iPhone.
“The most successful OEMs will be those already established in the mobile-phone business, that support all file formats and that have excellent sound quality.” Teng said. Successful OEMs also must have ...

Apple’s goal is to capture 1 percent of these unit sales, which seems attainable, according to Rebello.

Cash, Credit, Cell Phone, Finger...
New York - forbes
There are myriad ways to pay for goods and services today, but one of the best on-the-go payment methods has to be the E-ZPass electronic toll collection system used in seven Northeast states in the U.S. Drivers with E-ZPass transponders don't even have to slow down to pay tolls. They drive at the speed limit in a special lane, which is overhung with receivers that pick up a signal from the transponder on the dashboard, automatically deducting the toll.
With checks, credit and debit cards, and automatic withdrawal options, it's easier than ever to pay without cash. But current payment systems are complicated and time-intensive--checks need time to clear, credit card purchases need to be authorized and signed for, and the receipts have to be stored.
Customers want convenience. Merchants want efficiency and a cheap way to process payments ... more

Apple's iPhone has Wall Street chattering

By Elinor Mills, January 17, 2007

Apple sold 21 million iPods during its first quarter, but financial analysts asked almost as many questions of Apple executives Wednesday about a product that won't ship until June.
Executives didn't have any new revelations about Apple's iPhone after CEO Steve Jobs unveiled it last week at Macworld. The company held a conference call Wednesday afternoon to discuss its first-quarter results, which exceeded expectations by a large margin.
Apple's iPhone is essentially a widescreen video iPod that makes phone calls and can browse the Web, and the company plans to ship it in June for Cingular's cellular network. One of the more persistent questions about the iPhone has been Apple's decision to use Cingular's ... more

iPhone is defining a new consumer category

iPhone is defining a new consumer category

Sitting here in the Bloghaus with a few Nokia bloggers. They are slamming the iPhone. Can't expand memory. Can't update battery. Closed software environment. Two years of "selling your soul to Cingular." Glass keyboard sans tactile feedback. Scoble says iPhone OSX is as much OSX as WinMobile is Vista. Scoble also points out that it's vaporware, and a lot can change between slideware and the reality of manufacturing.
I'm sure they are all correct.
And it doesn't matter.
The iPhone will overcome these limitations.

Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs made a daring, calculated move when he strode onto the stage Tuesday to introduce the iPhone.
Just a week before, the Cupertino technology company's attorneys had been negotiating with their counterparts at Cisco Systems to secure the right to the iPhone trademark, which Cisco has held since June 2000 and uses on the mobile and cordless Internet phones it introduced last month.
The two companies had held on-and-off discussions over the name since 2001, when Apple approached the San Jose more

Cisco to Apple Inc: iPhone is ours

SAN FRANCISCO, California (Reuters) --
Cisco Systems Inc. on Wednesday sued Apple Inc. over its use of the iPhone trademark, a day after Apple shook up the cell-phone market by unveiling its sleek mobile phone using the name claimed by Cisco.
Shares of Apple, which are volatile, initially fell 1.3 percent in after-hours trade following the announcement, and then pared the loss to less than half a percent.
Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs debuted the long-rumored iPhone at the start of Apple's annual Macworld conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, and both companies had said a deal on the 'iPhone' name was near.

Apple answers the call with iPhone

Autor: Apple

Apple Announces 'iPhone' Mobile Communications Device

... “iPhone is a revolutionary and magical product that is literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone,” Jobs said in an official announcement from Apple Tuesday, following his keynote

In essence, Apple’s iPhone is a smartphone and mini computer (running OS X) with a 160ppi resolution, 3.5-inch touchscreen. Synching to a desktop computer—for multimedia and other data—will be managed through iTunes.

There are no buttons on the device Jobs demoed at Macworld—rather, the user’s finger serves as a sophisticated stylus, using a new technology called Multi-Touch. Multi-Touch solves the problem, Jobs said, of buttons fixed in place on mobile phones, which serve a purpose but nonetheless at times get in the way.

“We are all born with the ultimate pointing device -- our fingers -- and iPhone uses them to create the most revolutionary user interface since the mouse,” Jobs said in a statement.
For service to go with iPhone, Apple has entered into an exclusive partnership with Cingular (News - Alert). iPhone, a GSM and EDGE-capable device with WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0 functionality, will be available starting in June, after Apple gets FCC approval.

iPhone is for more than just talking, though—it best falls into the “smartphone” category in that users can surf the Web and perform messaging tasks using the device. Google (News - Alert) search and maps, along with Yahoo search and IMAP e-mail services, are built in.

Perhaps significantly, the primary search and e-mail related partnership announced Tuesday by Jobs was with Yahoo, not Google—although Google CEO Eric Schmidt did take the stage briefly to applaud iPhone and indicate that Google is working on a more full-fledged partnership with Apple.

Most industry standard IMAP and POP-based e-mail services will work with iPhone, Apple said Tuesday, including Microsoft Exchange, Apple .Mac Mail, AOL (News - Alert) Mail, and Google Gmail.

In his blog, Block quoted Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang as saying that iPhone’s search and e-mail functionalities, coupled with its other features, makes the device “like BlackBerry (News - Alert) without an Exchange Server.”

iPhone will be available in two models—4-gigabtye for $499 and 8-gigabyte for $599, Associated Press reported Tuesday.

In addition to its other features, the Apple iPhone boasts a built-in, 2-megapixel camera, headset jack, SIM tray, sleep-wake switch, speaker, mic input, and iPod connector. It is 11.6mm (0.46 inch) thick...

Skype says time is not ripe for cell phone version

LAS VEGAS--eBay's Skype believes the cell phone world is not ready for a version of its Internet telephone service that can be downloaded on any mobile phone, because of high carrier charges, the company's hardware and software business development chief said on Wednesday.
Skype uses a broadband Internet connection to place a voice call, cutting out the telephony network for which telecoms operators charge by the minute. Skype calls to other broadband-connected Skype users are free, and Skype calls to normal phones are inexpensive.
